Pilgrim blessing

Someone asked today in a comment on the blog what the pilgrim blessing is. There is a common pattern at churches and cathedrals and refuges along the way to offer a pilgrim blessing at some point in the day. There is usually a bit of liturgy as well, but the basic words of the blessing prayer are the same, and are as follows (in English, of course):

All-powerful God, you always show mercy toward those who love you and you are never far away for those who seek you. Remain with your servants on this holy pilgrimage and guide their way in accord with your will. Shelter them with your protection by day, give them the light of your grace by night, and, as their companion on the journey, bring them to their destination in safety.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
